I found Grey Gardens by chance one Christmas, a strange documentary about two eccentric women living in a ramshackle mansion in The Hamptons.
I loved Big Edie and Little Edie instantly. Though perhaps I could see something in myself in both that wasn't very positive, but strong and passionate
Despite living in terrible conditions the two Edies preferred to cling onto their past than sell it for money.
Thanks to Vix for this last one!

Little Edie has some fashion advice for you all. The whole documentary is free to watch on youtube
"Mother wanted me to come out in a Kimono, so we had quite a fight"

"I think that's the best costume for the day ... I have to think these things up!" Hooraaaaaaaay for Little Edie, I love her so much, wouldn't it be amazing to spend a week with her? Y'know, after they cleaned up the cat shit and the rats ... I could watch her everyday and I could look at you every single day in your gawwwwwjussssss outfits baby!!! I L-O-V-E the one piece you're wearing so goddam much I think I'm going to faint with desire and thank god for pantihose tops - you are lighting all my fires!!! xoxoxoxoxo
We are "kindred spirits" in our love of the Edies!! I too have both the old documentaries (as well as the new video...Grey gardens with Barrymore and Lange.)
I think you make a fabulous Edie!!
And I always knew you were a Staunch Charactor!!
Great post!!!!!!!
You ARE a Staunch Character indeed!
Did you do these pics on Picmonkey? Clever you, now tell me HOW?!
Love you in your cossie in your homage to Little Edie, the photos are brilliant.
Need to watch that documentary, it sounds weirdly wonderful, always a good combination.
You are obviously loving your dressing up at the moment, Clare, and I am loving seeing the results! More, more! xxxxx
"This is the best costume for the day" - ahaha. I quite like it! I had never seen Grey Gardens, though. I'm intrigued.
Grey Gardens changed my life- lol. I think this is my fave post of your yet!
Clare, you are a true artist. I just adore you. I've never heard of the documentary but I'm going to watch it tonight with a cup of tea. That ramshackle house is amazing!
I love these ladies. I even love the movie with Drew Berrymore and Jessica Lange.
OOoooh I can't wait to get home so I can watch it!
You are the most gorgeous Staunch Character in your spectacular swimsuit, with pantihose and headscarf - BEST OUTFIT EVER!
I suspect I shall have two more wonderful women to add to my list once I watch the vid... CAN'T WAIT!
Love! SARAH XXX
PS Skype soon??
You've just moved into a whole 'nother level of fabulous here, Clare. This is a stellar post that reflects your artist and your movie star qualities - both. The Edies are truly inspirational, although their house needed cleaning! I watched both docudramas and was glad that Little Edie finally got to perform in NYC.
Hi Clare, I've been reading your blog but haven't commented yet. Thank you so much for your creative renditions of the Grey Gardens and reminding me that I've wanted to watch the film for years. I finally did so tonight and had few "that's me in a few years" moments. Love Little Edie's fashion advice and her collection of sweaters, scarves and god know what else she wore on her head.
Clare you are quite a card, I love it! Oh, its looks fantastic, can't wait the check it out, thanks for the heads up. T x
Oh oh I just love Grey Gardens!!!!! Both the documentary and the movie are fabulous!!!! I just love watching them ever so often. It is fascinating to see what realities people can make when they leave society.
I was so excited when I saw the house in the first pic, you look amazing in the turban and coat.
Thanks for a great post.
Love V
You are blowing my mind here! I've loved Grey Gardens since I first saw it. You do it justice. Awesome stellar post!
Did you do all this art work in PicMonkey.
I thought you used Photoshop, please iluminate me.
So brilliant and inspiring, and the story of the two eddies is beyond fabulous, dear Clare.
You are ART.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Wow, this is amazing. I am enthralled. I had to go straight to google and find out about it. Now I need to see it!
I love the way you have done it with the pictures of you superimposed! Great idea.
Just based on those two clips I feel very sorry for Little Edie and I hope things turned out OK for her...fingers crossed. xxx
I love how you've superimposed yourself onto those backdrops, your such a techie whizz. What a fab blue costume too, it looks all sparkly fab, and a little bit bonkers. Where do you find these astounding stories of eccentricity?
Btw - I love your comments on my last post, 'Midsomer murders horsey look' is definitely a term I will be using in the future.
Xx
Oh oh oh, I've heard of this but never got around to watching the documentary. I must add it to the rental queue posthaste. Sounds right up my street, aristocratic lunacy and decaying old mansions, swoon! But, like others here, I MUST know how you managed your technical wizardry? I didn't think you could superimpose yourself like that on Picmonkey. Please tell me now, I can't bear it!!!!! xxx
Fabulous!
Liz @ Shortbread & Ginger
I've just come back home and I was intrigued by your new post as it comes out on my blog roll, but this is beyond my imagination, it's the best I could ever expected!Bravo!!
Your fashion lesson is spectacular!
I need to watch Gray Gardens now!!!!

This programme looks brilliant!! I'm sure I saw an advert for it when they were showing it.
Love how you've put yourself in the photos, you look fab!!

Yeah, really this was done with picmonkey- you need to teach me- as I need to learn to do collages better- and don't know photoshop-
Teach us, this rocks!
Hey! I was initially confused! I was like, "Why is Clare in the pictures and hasn't said why?!" you look totally cool!
Fantastic! I haven't seen Grey Gardens, the film or the documentary, in ages. Little Edie...what a legend.
You are fab.
xxxxx
This is truly brilliant! You gorgeous creative creature! Oh should I say you S T A U N C H woman! I'd rather cling to my past than sell it for anything!
xxoo
Now I feel really dense and have no clue what anyone's talking about - clearly I have to rectify this ASAP! Very cool though!
xx
Ooh, what a stellar tribute to the two Edies! I've seen the documentary and those two dames were just unbelievable. You do such fabulous costume posts Claire!

I think these photos are beautiful Clare, you've created something stunning here. I feel really excited to watch Grey Gardens on Youtube now. I'd heard of the film but never seen it and I didn't know there was a documentary, so looking forward to finding out what it's all about. It looks the kind of thing I would really enjoy, so thank you for that and for such gorgeous pictures. xx
I wish I live close to the flea market. I go when I travel to Málaga to see my youngest daughter who lives there. It is a car boot sale by the coast, mainly British and Germans living here
The outfit of silver flowers I am wearing today I got there for 1 euro- (50 cent the skirt and 50 the top)but I thought I better don´t write it or i will be called Mis papelicos 1 euro, hehehhehehehehe.
Thanks to you I added the silver metal roses ( from another pic to the material background in Picmonkey)
Much love dear Clare.
I haven't seen that movie in a really long time. I will have to watch it again. =D

OMG!! This is so brillant!!!
Fark, you look HOT!
I saw the film; it was quite wonderful/sad. That'll be ALL of us one day, rambling about in some huge house, frocking up like no-ones business! I need to see the whole doco, though......
You fecking ROCK!!!! You are a STAR, my darling!
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Dearest Clare,
Oh, you are also good at using photo-editer. Loved all the pictures(*^_^*)
So sorry, but I wish to get the meaning of the last phrase in this post. Does it mean your mother wanted you to go outside wearing Kimono? You must have one of them and I am happy for it, dear young friend.
Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
Just wonderful!
I'm reading back in time; the ones I missed and such. I need my Clare fix! :D I LOVE this one. Man, I love Little Edie so much. This documentary is one of my very favorites. I always thought their home was so beautiful. Even when it was no longer esthetically pleasing to the neighbors, I find something so lovely about the structure, and the meaningful bits. Ya know? I find such beauty in dilapidated homes and buildings.
You look terrific..the pictures are AWESOME! :D That one piece was just made for you. GORGE! XO
